ILAC 2024 Sessions

ILAC 2024 features more workshops, research talks, and immersive pedagogy and disciplinary lessons contributed from within the Learning Assistant Alliance community than ever before! Whether you are new, intermediate, or advanced in your understanding, practice, or research related to the LA model, there’s something for everyone. 

Below you will find brief overviews of the types of sessions offered at ILAC 2024, what day(s) these sessions will run, and current session titles.

LAA Plenary, Community-Building, and Reflective Sessions
(Friday - Monday)

Membersof the LAA Executive Committee will lead plenary sessions that highlight the current state of the LA model and LA programs, welcome new and experienced ILAC attendees into the community, and provide time and space for networking and collaboration, individual reflection, and planning next steps. These sessions will take place throughout the conference.


LAA-Sponsored Workshops
(Saturday)

LAA-sponsored workshop teams are led by experienced facilitators.  These workshops are engaging, provide opportunities for sharing questions and ideas, and provide resources for planning next steps in your classroom, program, and institution. They have been developed and facilitated by dozens of “LA Experts” from diverse institutions and are continually refreshed based on new knowledge and contexts. If you are newer to working with LAs or an LA Program, these sessions are for you!

Community-contributed Workshops

These workshops cover a range of topics, proposed and presented by members of the LAA community.

  • Revolutionizing learning: Dynamic strategies for active engagement in a non-STEM upper division course with the LA model
  • Doing your LAPS: Developing LA Plus Sessions to support the study cycle
  • STEM Learning Assistant personas: A tool to understand LAs' needs, goals, and science identities
  • A Call to Action: Positioning LAs a co-designers, partners, and leaders in enacting equity and justice in STEM classrooms

  • Exploring logic with POGIL (Process-Oriented Guided Inquiry Learning): Inquiry activities for general education math
  • Working with Learning Assistants in a POGIL classroom

  • Supercharging faculty to work with Learning Assistants: Training faculty in the art of science of teaching (the MoSI model)
  • Learning from LAs: How analyses of LA reflections can expand understanding

Immersive Pedagogy and Disciplinary Lessons
(Saturday, Sunday, Monday)

Experience a lesson from the student perspective! Pedagogy and disciplinary lessons immerse participants as learners within a specific pedagogy or discipline-specific lesson. 

Pedagogy Lessons:

  • STEM identity and intersectionality
  • Puzzled and intrigued: Simulating a problem-solving session to help LAs reflect on metacognitive thinking
  • Attending to students' in-the-moment learning
  • Metacognition: Being aware of what you're trying to accomplish
  • Highlighting NACE career competencies achieved through Learning Assistant experiences

Disciplinary Lessons:

  • Partial fraction via stations
  • Translating the language of life
  • Digital versus hands-on molecular modeling in exploring molecular shapes, VSEPR

Research Talks
(Saturday, Sunday)

Presenters with share their LAA-related research findings with the community

  • Why do they do what they do? A model to understand what drives Learning Assistant facilitation practices
  • Lessons from the ACCESS Fellowship: Developing LAs' structural lens to enact equity and justice in STEM learning environments
  • Exploring problem-solution feedback of Learning Assistants in LA Seminar via a design thinking project
  • Learning Assistants have comparable impacts on student belonging and confidence across science disciplines and course contexts
  • The impact of Learning Assistants on the experiences of first generation students
  • What makes an LA a peer mentor? Students' perceptions of mentoring supports from LAs in undergraduate STEM classrooms

Poster Session

Poster presenters will describe their work and/or research on the LA model, LA programs, course structures and curriculum materials used in an LA-supported course, or anything LA-related.
