Description

The 2023 International Learning Assistant Conference (ILAC) is an in-person conference focused on empowering the Learning Assistant community by: (1) bringing practitioners and researchers together to share best practices and findings, (2) generating new ideas, and (3) fostering collaborations with others around the world.

ILAC 2023 is designed for:

  • LA Program Directors and Coordinators who direct all aspects of implementing their LA Program, such as funding, infrastructure for recruiting and hiring LAs, faculty development, LA development, program evaluation, and working with other campus constituents such as Chairs, Deans, and Provosts, directors of other peer instruction programs (i.e. SI, PLTL, tutoring), and other campus Offices that may be involved in institutionalizing aspects of the LA Program.
  • Faculty who work with LAs in their courses, lead weekly instructional team prep meetings, and continue to iterate their course designs in order to improve outcomes and experiences for students and LAs. Experienced LA faculty may also be taking on leadership within their LA Program by mentoring faculty new to working with LAs and/or partnering with LA Program directors and coordinators in some aspects of program implementation or advocacy.
  • LA Pedagogy Instructors who develop and lead pedagogical training for new LAs and who may also be involved in ongoing development for experienced LAs.
  • Researchers who engage in scholarship and/or program evaluation related to LA Programs and the LA model.
  • Administrators who support an LA program or wish to work with faculty to start an LA program at their institution.

What can I expect as a participant at the ILAC 2023?

  • Community! Meet new collaborators and strengthen existing partnerships through networking and collaboration opportunities.
  • Participatory workshops focused on implementing, innovating, assessing, and sustaining your LA program through utilization of inclusive, evidence-based practices.
  • Opportunities to share your LA-related research and unique ideas with the community via research talks, pedagogy and disciplinary lesson experiences, and poster sessions.

Assemble your institutional team!

We recommend assembling a core team from your institution to attend ILAC, with interests and expertise spanning the critical LA Program roles described above. Teams of 2-4 work well. Since this is a small conference (a total of about 130 participants, organizers, and facilitators), we ask that you limit your team size to six members. That way, we can ensure that a variety of different institutions can be represented, which helps all of us learn more about how the LA model is adapted and implemented in diverse settings.

Don’t have a team (yet)? No problem. Please still join us, and we will help you find other "critical friends" at the conference! You might also want to find others at your institution who also have accounts on the Learning Assistant Alliance website, using the Connect search tool. (Click on "My Campus" on the left menu, and then your institution's name, to see the directory for your campus.)
